a. Adult Literacy Project:

 

DNFE aims at imparting literacy training to the adults of 11-45 years age group; more importantly for motivating adult-illiterates to enrich themselves in reading and writing skill. Particularly, the heads of their family are motivated to provide education to their children, which in turn, serves the double purposes of making the “Universal Primary Education Program” a success and simultaneously prevent children from growing up as adult-illiterate. The duration of the program is 12 months and divided into two sessions of 9 months and 3 months. The first session covers the development of learning skill and the second session is meant for following-up lessons and enhancement of the merely learnt literacy skill. The content of the teaching materials covered topics on family life, basic economic concepts including income generation activities, health & sanitation, nutrition, various social & legal aspects, environment pollution, anti-smoking, anti-drug campaign and specially the subjects relating to the gender sensitization difficulty of men and women in all sphere of life. Financial assistance from World Bank, Asian Development Bank (ADB), SDC and Government of Bangladesh (GOB) through Bureau of Non Formal Education (BNFE) former Directorate of Non Formal Education (DNFE), CISD has been implemented Adult Literacy Project in different areas of the country. During the project period, CISD operated 765 learning center in the project areas.

 

b. Hard to Reach Project:

 

In Bangladesh, there are children in Urban areas like Dhaka, Khulna and Rajshahi cities, who are really “Hard to Reach” with formal education program, because their work hours conflict with the formal school system. These are the children, one sees breaking bricks, picking rags, working in domestic services, selling flowers or involved in commercial sex. It is estimated that about 6.6 million children of ages between 8 to 14 years are working children i.e. “Hard to Reach” children. UNICEF and DNFE has jointly implemented "Basic Education for Hard to Reach Urban Children (BEHTRUC)" through NGOs which encompassed approx. 107,000 children in about 3500 centers in urban areas.

 

Financial assistance from UNICEF through Bureau of Non Formal Education (BNFE) former Directorate of Non Formal Education (DNFE), CISD has been implemented, CISD has been Hard To Reach Project  in Mohammadpur, Dhanmondi, Lalbag area of Dhaka City Corporation Area (Ward No. 48: 15 centers, Ward No 46: 15 Center and Ward No 65 implemented 75 centers). All of those slum-students are engaged in different professions like Domestic worker, Industrial labor, Low-paid Garment Worker, Street hawker, Tempo helper, Tea-stall Worker, Waste collector (known as TOKAI), sex-slavery etc. Under this project, CISD operated 75 nos. of learning centers in the project period.

 

c. Post Literacy and Continuing Education for Human Development (PLCEHD)    Project-1:

 

The Post Literacy and Continuing Education for Human Development Project (PLCEHD-1) started operation in December 2002 and will continue up to June 2007. The main task of the project is to help the learners to improve their acquired basic literacy skills; motivate the learners to apply their skills at individual, family and group levels (In their productive, family and social role); make the learners aware of the availability of government and non-government facilities and to prove them with the information as to how to have access to and derive benefits from these facilities; organize training to develop skills at the local levels considering; learners’ demand, demand for goods and services in the local market and available opportunities for skills training in the area; enhance the social standing of the neo literate by helping improve their living conditions and livelihood; develop technical skills and capacity of neo literate for getting them involved in continuing education activities and ultimately, help development of the neo-literate as an enlightened and productive citizen, eliminate gender disparity and establish social equitability expediting women empowerment. Financial assistance from World Bank, SDC and Government of Bangladesh (GOB), as a implementing organization, CISD has been implemented Post Literacy and Continuing Education for Human Development Project-1 in Belkuchi and Kazipur upazila of Sirajganj district and Haluaghat upazila of Mymensingh district from 2002 to 2007. During the project period operated total 75 leaning centers in each working phase. The project is being implemented in 17 unions of 3 different upazilas and dealt with 4500 direct beneficiaries. The major aim of the project is to generate self and wage employment of the learners.

 

In the CE Courses CISD has been provided skill based training courses e.g. tailoring, Poultry, Cow and goat fattening and Cow rearing. By the 31st December 2007, CISD has provided literacy and numeracy and skill development training for 4500 learners. 

CISD has been performed as a monitoring NGO under PLCEHD project-1 in Hatibandha upazila of Lalmonirhat district for the period from January 2003 to December 2007. Under this project component CISD has monitored the activities of two PI-NGOs. Upazila Program Organizer of this project of CISD performed for need assessment, linkage development and other development activities. 

 

d. Post Literacy and Continuing Education for Human Development (PLCEHD)    Project-2:

 

Post Literacy and Continuing Education for Human Development (PLCEHD) added a new dimension to the diverse activities of non-formal literacy programs which are being implemented by Bureau of Non-formal Education the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education. PLCEHD project is designed to turn the target people (11-45 years) into skilled human resource through training on skill building, profession-oriented activities, and income earning and creative activities in addition to making them literate under literacy program. On completion of the training on skill development for self employment, trainees will be linked with financial institution for providing micro credit support so that they can carry on petty business. 

 

Financial assistance from Asian Development Bank, SDC and Government of Bangladesh (GOB), CISD has been implemented the project at Charfassion Upazila of Bhola District as a development partner of lead organization Swanirvar Bangladesh from 2009 to 2011. Under this project CISD operated to 68 learning centers in two working cycles. Under this project, CISD has provided literacy and numeracy and skill development training for 4080 learners.
